Dallas Orioles Game Recaps
Your place to read about each and every game.
It's that time of year again. The weather is warmer, days are longer, and the struggle for a decent strike zone has returned! Hell yes, it's baseball season, which means it's time for the 2017 Season Preview for your favorite team around, the Dallas Orioles.
The team has added some new blood for the spring season. JP Weber made his Orioles debut during the Dallas Open and made one of the most incredible catches we have ever seen. With his long, Fabio-like hair and top end speed, JP will be noticed on the base paths and around the league. Another couple guys who joined in the fall will make their spring debuts, Vinnie Pokornowski and Rolando Villa. Vinnie was a horse on the mound for the O's in Fall Ball, working fast and throwing strikes. He figures to play a prominent role in the rotation going forward. Rolando was no slouch himself, playing solid defense at first base and throwing quality innings when put in there. He'll be a nice option in relief and the occasional spot start. There are three brand spanking new players as well: Justin Soto, Pierce Ryan, and Zaza de la Soujeole. Justin comes to us from California and has recently moved into the area. He is a middle infielder by trade and will become Timmy Hanan's new long toss partner has it seems he actually has the arm to throw with him. A solid bat and will also throw some in relief for us. Pierce Ryan was this year's draft pick. He's a local kid who graduated from Jesuit High and played there, earning All-District his senior year for a team that went to the state regional finals. He'll be playing both infield and outfield for us. Zaza is brother to long-time Dallas Oriole, Luc. We officially have two Frenchies! Zaza plays second and it's possible we see the brother's play up the middle together at some point this year. While there are more new faces this year than ever before, we still many faces that you know and love. Manager Tony Cass, Cody Gladney, Boston Coppedge, Preston Cole, and Carlos Colon are all returning for their 6th season with the O's. Long-time regulars Luc de la Soujeole and Tim Hanan are back in action and ready to be the deadly 1-2 punch at the top of the order once again. All of our all-stars from last year are returning as well: Luc, Tanner Stevenson, Jake Bellington, and Josh McEachin. Tanner picked up a fiancée over the off-season so a new permanent nickname will be upcoming. Bachelor doesn't seem to fit a man engaged to be married. Congrats bud! Last year's spring addition, Jeff Lunsford will be back as well to see if he can lead the team in bombs this year and Alex Faught will be part-time this year as he has a crazy year ahead. The pitching staff seems to get better and better every year. Josh "McEasy" McEachin is back for his second year with the O's and looks to make it three straight years as the American League win leader. McEasy went 7-1 last year and looks to continue his strong play into 2017. Timmy "The Cannon" Hanan has returned for his 5th year on the squad and (SPOILER ALERT!) will get the Opening Day start against the Indians this Sunday. Timmy had 5 saves last year and will be a key cog in the pitching rotation. Cody "Warhorse" Gladney returns this year after a solid 4-1 record last year, which was good for 2nd on the team in wins. He's also got his son, Cade, due in about two weeks so we're all pretty excited about that. His dad will be teaching him how to place a fastball on the outside corner in no time. Remember Cody, you get one game off. Newcomer Vinnie Pokornowski should round out the rotation, giving us four solid guys who can go out and throw deep into games. Relief pitching is always tricky in this league but there are many people who we'll rely on to bridge the gaps this year. Preston Cole had a 10.5 K/9 last year which led the team. PCole not only has returned to strike out batters, he's also picked up a fiancée over the off-season and (smartly) planned a January wedding. He knows not to schedule a wedding in-season. (Looking at you Tanner!) Rolando Villa and Justin Soto will be relied on as well to get outs in the middle innings. A newcomer to the bullpen, Tanner Stevenson has been working a little bit on the mound and we should see his fresh arm come out in a few games this year. JP Weber threw well for the O's in the Dallas Open and makes a welcome addition to the bullpen, along with Sweetbeard who will make the occasional appearance as well. Offensively, the team returns a majority of players who helped the O's average over 8 runs a game. The team is a balanced up and down the lineup as ever seen before and should continue to generate runs at a quality clip. Tanner Stevenson looks to continue his .450+ batting average days in 2017 and anchor the O's offense from the cleanup spot. Boston Coppedge looks to rebound after a down year average wise and put up another 20+ RBI's again this season. Frenchie will be taking off on the basepaths and wants to have another year of double digit steals. McEasy looks to continue his strong offense start after hiting .375 last year and being in the top 3 in multiple offensive categories. Hanan was quite possibly the hottest hitter in the Dallas area from Labor Day onwards as he hit close to .700 over his final 15 games of the season. Lunsford, Bellington, and Cass all hit over .300 last year as well. The team is going to score runs. With the new additions and return of already solid players, the O's are primed to reclaim the American League crown from the Tube Sox (terrible name) aka Nationals this spring. American League Preview to come later on tonight.

Nationals – 6
Orioles – 7 WP: Josh “McEasy” McEachin (7-1) 3B: Tim Hanan 2B: Matt Garrabrants Orioles score early, hang on late to beat a depleted Nationals team 7-6 to move within half a game of 1st place. Josh “McEasy” McEachin got the start to go after his 7th win on the year. Josh has been the staff ace of the league this year, though the first batter didn’t exactly give him the respect he deserves. After just missing on a 2-2 pitch, the lead-off batter took McEasy deep for the first run of the game. After not giving up any homeruns on the year, O’s pitchers have given up bombs in the first inning in back to back games. McEasy did settle back down to retire the next three batters in quick order, leaving the damage at one run. The O’s responded quickly with Hanan, Coppedge, and Garrabrants getting base hits back to back to back. After the Hanan single, he stole second and score on Coppedge’s single up the middle to tie the game. Garrabrants doubled to put runners at 2nd and 3rd and McEasy brought in Coppedge on a groundout to give the O’s the lead at 2-1. As McEasy settled in for the next couple of innings, the O’s went back to work offensively. The second inning led off with hits from Kurt “Special K” Karnowski and Preston “PCB” Cole. With runners at the corners, Kevin Simmons hit a sac fly to score Karnowski. After another single from Carlos Colon, Cody “QB1” Gladney singled to score PCB and push the score to 4-1. The Nationals did manage to close the gap in the top of the 4th, scoring 3 runs with two outs to within one at 5-4. The O’s increased their lead in the bottom of the inning, starting off with another hit from PCB and Simmons reaching on an error. Colon also had his 2nd hit of the game, scoring PCB and moving Simmons to 3rd. Gladney followed up with the second sac fly of the day for the O’s to score Simmons and the O’s lead 7-4. McEasy was still throwing into the 6th and had two one with two out when the 9-hole hitter hit a bloop single to score both runners and get the lead back down to one. Leadoff batter came up with an opportunity to tie up the game for the Nats and flew out to right field to end the inning. With six in the books, enter our own version of Aroldis Chapman: Matt Garrabrants. Garrabrants has been crazy efficient on the mound this year, vastly different from year’s past, and just shredded the Nationals 2-3-4 hitters in order in only 8 pitches to end the game. The “woodchipper” was in full effect. News and Notes: With the win, the O’s have taken the season series from every team in their division but they are still half a game behind the Nats for first place overall. The O’s are 15-3-1 which is their best mark in the regular season in the past five years. The Nationals will play the 3rd place Pelicans in a double header on Tuesday which will determine 1-3 place in the playoffs. With an O’s win over the Indians and one Pelicans win over the Nationals, the O’s would take 1st place overall due to the head to head tiebreaker. Next Game: Tuesday, 7:00 PM, Home vs Indians Probable Starter: A. Faught Orioles - 9
Pelicans - 12 LP: Cody Gladney (3-1) 2B: Boston Coppedge, Luc de la Soujeole It seems like every O's starter has one bad game on the resume this season. This was Cody's. Gladney got the start and he seemed to have some control issues, allowing the first four batters to reach (three via walk). A sac fly and a win aided home run later, the O's were down 5 early. The O's offense loaded the bases in the first but couldn't convert that into runs so it was a bit of a worst case scenario. The second inning didn't go much better with the Pelicans putting another three runs across to push the score up to 8-0. The 3rd inning finally saw the O's get on the board with Jake reaching on an error. A one out single from Frenchie gave the O's two on and the O's scored on a passed ball to bring Jake in. After a Coppedge walk, McEasy singled home Frenchie to put the O's back to 8-2. Unfortunately, the Pelicans put up their own two spot and regained their eight run lead. The comeback effort started in the fourth with the help of a couple errors. After a pop-up to the shortstop for the first out, both Cass and Sweetbeard reached with the help of the other team. PCB singled to load the bases and Jameson brought him in on a fielder's choice. The two out rally brigade came to play with a single from Kevin Simmons to bring home one. Frenchie doubled to put runners on second and third and Bachelor followed with a four pitch walk. After the pitcher threw a 5th straight ball, Coppedge laced a double down the left field line, clearing the bases and getting the O's nearly all the way back at 10-8. After three innings, Gladney gave way to M. Garrabrants who ended up throwing three solid innings himself, giving up two runs and helping keep the game close. The O's had another late rally, loading the bases with two outs in the 7th but just couldn't come up with enough hits to claw all the way back. News and Notes:
Game 1:
Orioles - 13 Old Fashioneds - 3 WP: Timmy "Cannon" Hanan (3-1) 3B: Anthony Cass 2B: Carlos Colon, Steve Garrabrants While the game might have had two halves a month apart, both of them were dominated with the pitching of Timmy "Cannon" Hanan, throwing a combined seven innings as the Orioles rolled to a 13-3 victory. In the first half of the game, Timmy had his most efficient four innings in his long history with the Orioles, throwing only 50 pitches through four innings, allowing only three hits and three walks. The Orioles offense got going in the second inning with Anthony Cass earning his way on with a bruise. After a passed ball moved him to second, a single from "Special K" Karnowski moved him over to third. With two outs, Jake Bellington hit a comebacker to the mound which was promptly overthrown, allowing Cass to score and put the O's up 1-0. The O's got it started again in the 3rd with Sweetbeard leading off with a single and Coppedge drawing his second walk of the day. Two wild pitches later, Sweetbeard scored and moved Coppedge over to third. Hanan helped his own cause and gained an RBI with a groundout to third to score Coppedge. Anthony Cass followed that with a single and stolen base and scored on another single from PCole to push the score to 4-0. After this, a mini-monsoon laid waste to the Lake Highlands field so the game's second half was moved to Jesuit about a month later, and the offense started off hot, scoring three more in the 5th. Hanan walked and stole second and moved to third on another hit from Cass. Although Cass was thrown out on a fielder's choice from PCole, a single from Special K and then a big double from Carlos Colon to score them both made the lead 7-0 and effectively ending the game at that point. The Orioles finished with 16 hits in the game, led by Cass going 3-4 with triple, 3 R scored, and two RBI. Cass is hitting a robust .324 on the year and is tied of the team lead in triples on the year. Miracles never cease. Timmy threw another solid three innings and finished the game with 7 IP with only 1 ER allowed. A solid effort from the Cannon who made a nice return to the mound and tied Gladney again with three wins. The last two innings were thrown by Jameson and PCole. PCole had a nice 1-2-3 inning on the mound and has maintained his high K/9 rate all year, ranking in the top 3 on the team in the stat. Game 2 Orioles: 10 Old Fashioneds: 6 WP: Josh "McEasy" McEachin (6-1) SV: Tim "Cannon" Hanan (4) 3B: Preston Cole 2B: Steve Garrabrants, Kevin Simmons The Orioles came out hot with the sticks in Game 2 and a familiar face closed it down during the doubleheader sweep. The Orioles offense seems to be rounding into form and the evidence of that was on display on Sunday afternoon. After taking the first game easily, the O's got started with four early runs in the first. Frenchie drew another walk, stole second and was driven home by yet another extra base hit from Steve Garrabrants. That was followed by a singles from McEasy and Timmy Hanan which scored runs. A couple of hits and an error later, the score moved to 4-0 and the O's were off to the races. The second inning held more of the same. A single from PCB and a double from Simmons to score him felt familiar. A walk to Frenchie and singles to Garranbrants and McEasy pushed it to 7-0. Kurt "Special K" Karnowski continued his hot hitting with another single (his 4th in a row at that point) to swell the lead to 8-0. The O's put McEasy on the bump and he pitched like the ace that he is. While he didn't have his best stuff, he didn't struggled much with the 'Neds offense, giving up 2R (1ER) on a two run bomb from the 'Neds catcher. While he must feel some slight shame from this discretion and his lack of strikeouts on the day, he only allowed two walks and six hits over his five innings of work. He had the nice cushion to work with so he just went about his business on this day. Steve Garrabrants came on in relief and threw some quality innings of relief. Throwing mainly fastballs on the outside corner, Garrabrants threw three innings, allowing two runs and not giving much to the 'Neds in terms of building a rally. Things did get a little dicey towards the end with the 'Neds putting a couple on the board against Special K in the 9th. The O's had Matty Garrabrants warming up in the 'pen but the O's short stop wanted the ball so he got the ball. Cue the Cannon. Timmy Hanan came in and made quick work of the game, striking out his first batter and inducing the game ending groundout to Frenchie at short. Since the tying run was on deck, technically Tim gets a save out of the deal which doesn't hurt his feelings. News and Notes:
We've hit another quarter pole in the spring season which means it's time for updated stats. Below are the top 3 (and ties) in the major categories. Steve Garrabrants and Nick Bird are left off due to lack of AB's to qualify. Also does not include partial game with Old Fashioneds. Those stats will be put in when game is completed on Sunday.

7/5/2016, Graham Field
Orioles - 6 Indians - 1 WP: Cody Gladney (3-0) Playing on the beautiful Graham Field at Prestonwood Christian Academy, the Orioles followed a strong start by Cody "QB1" Gladney to put down the Indians 6-1 on Tuesday night. Gladney had been slightly overlooked going into this year with the three headed monster of McEasy, Timmy "Cannon" Hanan, and Alex Faught thought to take up the bulk of the innings. We need to consider him now the 4th horseman with his latest start on the year. Gladney worked around two first inning walks to get out of trouble and pretty much hit cruise control after that. Only an error from Kurt "Special K" Karnowski led to the Indians only runner to reach past second base for the entire game. Gladney's line: 5 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 H, 5 K, 2 BB. Another great day for Gladney, who lowered his ERA to an incredible 1.57 on the year. He's also averaging nearly 6 IP per start, easily the highest on the team. The game was a competitive one deep into the game. The O's got started with their scoring in the 2nd with walks to McEasy and M. Garrabrants and moved up a base on a passed ball. Gladney helped his cause with a groundball to score McEasy and even reached base when the shortstop flubbed the throw to 1st. After a couple of quick outs, Special K continued his hard hitting with a nice stroke into right to score Garrabrants and put the O's up by two. The O's had opportunities go to waste with loading the bases in the 5th and not scoring and having a couple of guys thrown out on the basepaths (more on that later). The O's broke through in the 7th with M. Garrabrants starting off with a sharp single up the middle and stealing 2nd base to show everyone that he's still got some wheels. Garrabrants hit another deep ball that was caught at the warning track earlier in the game and seems to be heating up at the plate...just in time for the playoffs. Nothing gets Garrabrants rolling like the smell of playoff baseball on the horizon. After a single from Gladney and a walk for Carlos Colon, Anthony Cass drew a bases loaded walk to score Garrabrants. Special K followed with a grounder to 1st who threw home for the force at home to get Gladney. Unfortunately for the Indians, the catcher tried to make it a double play and threw it all the way down the right field line, scoring Carlos and Cass and pushing the lead to 5-1. Jameson followed with a chop to the pitcher, who had to dive for the ball, which allowed Kurt to score from 3rd and push the lead to the final score of 6-1. M. Garrabrants and McEasy both got an inning of relief and both guys kept up their stellar seasons on the mound. Garrabrants had a ho-hum 9 pitch, 1-2-3 inning and McEasy got some pen work in, striking out two to close it down in the 7th. News and Notes: Boobstick Transfer: Ah yes. We have another transfer of the BS. This week's winner: Frenchie. Luc lined a single and though he could stretch it into two bases. He was wrong by a good 15 feet. Can't win them all Frenchie. With the win, Gladney moved into 2nd on the team in innings pitched and wins with three, meaning he has passed Timmy "The Cannon" Hanan in that column, a point he is especially proud of. Tim has a chance to tie him up on Sunday when we resume the Old Fashioneds game he was dominating through four innings. Gladney has volunteered to start off that game for Tim to get in line for the win and then let Tim go back into the game to finish it out. We'll find out from Hanan if he's alright with that idea. We have a double header of sorts on Sunday with the conclusion of the previous Old Fashioneds game followed immediately by another game against the 'Neds. The first game will resume at 11:00 am at Jesuit HS so let's try and have those hangovers minimized earlier than normal, shall we gentlemen? Stats have also been updated and will be posted tomorrow. Next game(s): Sunday, Away vs Old Fashioneds, 11:00 am/1:00 pm, Jesuit HS P. Starters: T. Hanan, J. McEachin Due to working conditions and the holiday weekend, this writer is a little behind with the write-ups but not to fear, we're going to knock out both today so Kirk Pruitt can see who owns the boobstick on this day. 6/28/16, McInnish Park #11 Braves - 5 Orioles - 7 WP: Josh "McEasy" McEachin (5-1) 2B: Boston Coppedge In what has become routine this year, the Orioles downed the Braves with McEasy on the bump by a score of 7-5. McEasy has had a stellar run in his first season with the O's and tonight was no different with him facing his former club for a 3rd time this season. He started off the game doing it all himself with 2 K's and a popout to himself in the first three batters. While he didn't have the strikeout numbers that we've come to expect, he did still mow down four Braves in his four innings of work to give him 20K's in 12 IP against the Braves. He did finally give up a run in the 4th on a sac fly but that was all the damage he would allow on this night. The Orioles offense came alive in the 3rd, sending 9 guys to the plate and scoring 4. One out walks to Cody "QB1" Gladney and Carlos Colon set the stage for Jake "Jameson" Bellington who singled home Gladney and continued his hot hitting on the year. After a flyout to center by Kevin Simmons, the Braves made an error, allowing Frenchie to reach base and allowing the inning to continue. Boston Coppedge lined a double to right, scoring two and pushing the score up to 3-0. He was followed by longtime Oriole Steve "Lostboy" Garrabrants, smashing a single through the left side, scoring Frenchie and pushing the lead up to 4-0. After a empty threat to score by the O's in the 4th by loading the bases and not scoring, the Braves pushed one across to make it 4-1. That was as close of a serious threat as they would have with the O's pushing another three across in the top of the 5th. Frenchie started it off with a one out single and stole second base. He came home on another Coppedge hit to make it 5-1 and give Coppedge his 3rd RBI on the night. Back to back singles from Lostboy Garrabrants and McEasy scored another two runs and push the lead up to 7-1. Lostboy also made his 2016 debut on the mound and faced the minimum for two innings. Striking out his first batter to show he still had something in the tank, he did allow a single in the mix which was later erased on the common 2-1-5 putout to end the 5th. Another efficient 6th with a groundout to 3rd and two K's to finish his night capped the night for S. Garrabrants. Preston "PCB" Cole came on to finish up the 7th and ran into a little trouble with his command. PCB hadn't pitched in over a month when he threw two shutout innings against the Athletics so it was natural to have a little bit of rust. After a couple of walks and a single, he got a big first out on a flyout to left. While he did allow a double and hit a batter, P. Cole settled down after a quick conversation on the mound with B. Coppedge and proceeded to strike out his final batter to seal the win for the O's and push their record to 11-2-1. News and Notes Boobstick Transfer: McEasy seemed destined to receive the BS last game but was bailed out by Jameson's running error. This week, he was not as lucky. McEasy was running from first when Matt Garrabrants hit a high drive to the left field corner. A great play by the left fielder turned into a double play since McEasy was already at 3rd base, assuming the catch wouldn't be made. It does seem fitting that he would get it against his former club which he dominated through the season. Price to pay I suppose. Pirates - 5
Orioles - 7 WP: Cody "QB1" Gladney (2-0) SV: Josh "McEasy" McEachin (1) Your Orioles were back in action on Sunday with a skeleton crew of 9 after having a season-high 15 show up. On the bump was the old war horse, Cody Gladney. The game started off with the Pirates putting a couple of runs on the board with four hits, all singles. While this might have frustrated mere mortal men, this wouldn't stop Gladney on this day. The Orioles got back to even in the third with Carlos Colon, leading it off with a double to right, getting him off the schnide for the year. After a couple ground ball outs, Tanner "Bachelor" Stevenson drew a walk and Boston Coppedge hit a double to the right center gap, scoring both Colon and Bachelor all the way from 1st to tie it up at 2. The Buccos scored once in the 4th and twice in the 5th to push their lead to 5-2 into the 7th inning, where the bottom of the order got the rally started. Cass singled and was followed by Colon hitting his second double of the night to the left center gap. With runners at 2nd and 3rd, Jake "Jameson" Bellington singled to left for his second of three hits on the day, scoring Cass and getting the O's to within two. After another hit from Frenchie to load the bases, Bachelor unloaded a smash to the right center gap, scoring Colon, Jameson, and Frenchie, ending up on 3rd for his first triple of the year. Coppedge struck out looking and walks to McEasy and Gladney brought up Kurt "Special K" Karnowski to hit a sac fly to left to score Bachelor and give the O's a two-run lead. Gladney delivered a monster effort in a game where we needed the starter to put in a lot of innings and that's exactly what he did, giving us 7 solid innings. Gladney final line: 7 IP, 5R, 3 ER, 10 H, 4 K, 1 HBP, 0 BB, 178 pitches thrown (approximate). McEasy came on in relief for the final two innings and shut the door. O's defense showed some shaky defense making a couple errors in the 9th, allowing the Pirates to load the bases with one out but McEasy buckled down and got the final two outs without giving up a run. News and Notes: Boobstick Transfer: While this was going to be reserved for McEasy getting picked off on the bases at 3rd, he was bailed out by Jameson attempting to steal 3rd base on the sly between an at-bat. He was easily thrown out at 3rd, costing Coppedge an at-bat and giving himself the uncoveted title of Boobstick Owner. It was redemption day for Colon and Coppedge, both who had multiple hit days after struggling for the better part of the year. They hit multiple balls hard tonight in big spots. O's reach 10 wins and guarantee another winning season for the 4th season in a row. Nice job boys. Next Game: Tuesday 6/28, Home vs Braves, McInnish @ 6:45 PM Probable Starter: McEasy Nationals - 4
Orioles - 3 LP: Josh "McEasy" McEachin (4-1) 3B: Luc de la Soujeole The Orioles fall to their main rivals in a close game that was a painfully short five innings. The Nationals struck early against McEasy, scoring all four of their runs in the 1st. An infield single, hit by pitch, and walk loaded the bases with one out when a slider bounced on the plate and scored the first run. Gary "HotBoyz" Davis then bounced a ball that just eluded Tanner "Bachelor" Stevenson at 3rd base, resulting in a double and scoring another two runs. Gary came home on another single and the O's were down early. Frenchie led off the game and smoked a triple to the left-center gap, running through his stop sign to stop at 2nd. Anthony Cass, who tripled in the first game of the year, couldn't imagine that Frenchie is faster than he is. He scored when M. Garrabrants reached on an error to short. The O's would score two more in the 3rd inning after Bachelor hit a soft line drive to short. The short stop couldn't come up with the catch but knocked it down and overthrew 1st, which scored PCB and Jameson, cutting the score to 4-3. McEasy got into a groove after the first, not allowing another run in the following three innings, although there were many at bats which went 8+ pitches deep. Credit to the Nationals hitters for not going down without a fight. McEasy's line on the night: 4 IP, 4R, 6H, 2BB, 1HBP, 5K. He was helped out of the 4th inning by a pick-off throw from B. Coppedge to nail a lazy runner getting back to the bag at first. The O's threatened in the in the last two innings but just couldn't push the last run across to tie the game. The end of the game ended with line drive double play with Kurt "Special K" Karnowski smoking a ball to 3rd. A foot to either side would have scored the runner and push the winning run to scoring position, but that's just the way baseball go as Ronnie Wash used to say. The Orioles fall to 9-2-1 on the year and remain a clear top team in the league once again this year. Next Game: Sunday 6/26, Home vs Pirates, 4:00, Lake Highlands High School Probable Starter: C. Gladney |
