Orioles - 9
Athletics - 9 WP: None 2B: Alex Faught, Luc de la Soujeole aka Frenchie, Josh "McEasy" McEachin, Kurt "Special K" Karnowski It what can only be described as an ugly performance, the Orioles manage to salvage a tie on Sunday with the A's 9-9. The O's started off the top of the 1st hot as Alex Faught and Luc de la Soujeole both doubled to get the scoring started. Coppedge followed with a single to right center to push the lead to 2-0. After a Garrabrants fly out to left, McEasy doubled to score Karnowski who was running for Coppedge. After another single by Hanan to push the lead to 4-0, the wheels started to unravel. Hanan was "picked off" on 1st base when field umpire Derek decided he needed to get outs early, assuming that the O's were well on their way to a run rule situation. When asked about this, Derek admitted as much and this started a string of errors for the O's. Jake Bellington got his first start of the year and started off a bit shaky with the first three guys reaching. With the bases loaded and no one out, Bellington got a fielder's choice for the first out that was nearly a double play if Coppedge had held onto the ball at first. Luckily for Coppedge, Bellington struck out the next batter and Timmy "Cannon" Hanan threw out the runner at 2nd for a strike em out, throw em out double play. Bellington threw two innings, giving up 2 runs (1 ER), walking three and striking out two. Preston Cole followed Bellington with two effective innings, giving up two hits, walking one, and striking out four. None of the pitchers got stellar defensive help today and we'll dive more into that later. The Orioles pushed their lead to 5-2 with a walk to Bellington. With his dangerous speed on the bases, the pitcher threw over to first and threw it away, helping Bellington go from 1st to 3rd on the play. Only a couple pitches later, Bellington made the pitcher so nervous that he actually tried to pick him off of 3rd this time. Unfortunately for him, he actually threw it away again, scoring Bellington from 3rd. Things started to really unravel for the O's in the bottom of the 5th. Anthony Cass started off the inning by walking the first two batters and then beaning the third in the kneecap. Definitely not a sound you ever want to hear at the ballpark. Cass was pulled for Alex Faught who promptly struck out the first batter he faced. The next batter has his bat explode after he makes contact with the pitch, causing a slow roller to 3rd base. McEasy gathers the ball and overthrows 1st base, allowing two runs to score. Tanner "Bachelor" Stevenson chases after the ball and overthrows catcher Tim Hanan, allowing three runs to score on the play. After getting another groundout, a single brought in the 4th unearned run of the inning. Things finally settle down with the O's as the pitching of Faught and Hanan retired the next nine batters in a row, but the offense couldn't get a key hit in the 6th, 7th, or 8th innings, leaving baserunners all over the place. Things were starting to look dire as the O's came up in the 9th down 8-5. McEasy started off with a single but was followed by a fielder's choice from Hanan. After a walk to Carlos Colon, Cole struck out, leaving two runners on and two outs. A walk to Stevenson set up a clutch two RBI single by Cass. Bellington hit a slow grounder to shortstop which was promptly thrown away scoring Stevenson and tying the game. Kurt Karnowski follows that with a double of his own for his second hit of the day, scoring Tony and giving the O's a one run lead going into the bottom of the 9th. With Hanan on the mound, the O's were in prime position to steal a win that they all knew they didn't deserve and it seems like the baseball gods knew this as well. After a easy comebacker to the mound, the O's were two outs away. The next batters hits a 3-2 line drive over Cole's head in center field that some might view as remenicent of watching Nelson Cruz in Game 6 of the World Series. First step is always back. Coppedge then has a pass ball on a fastball he needs to have which advanced the runner to 3rd, bringing the infield in. The next batter hits a soft pop up over 2nd base which would have been an easy catch if not for the infield playing in. While Hanan cleaned up the rest of the inning with no issue, the O's knew they left a lot on the board in this one and are lucky to get away with only a tie. News and Notes: Boobstick Transfer: Tanner Stevenson has reclaimed his rights to the boobstick by getting picked off on 1st base by stealing way way way way way too early. While there were many owners of the boobstick possibly on this day, Tanner gets to take home the trophy and get it looking all nice and pretty again. We are rained out for Tuesday night's game vs the Braves so we are back in action on Sunday vs the Nationals where we can regain 1st place in the division, our rightful place.

Orioles - 5
Pirates - 2 WP: Cody Gladney (1-0) Cody Gladney got his first start of the year and turned in five scoreless innings to lead the way for the Orioles over the Pirates. Gladney was efficient with his pitch count, only throwing 58 pitches. He gave up two hits, struck out three and hit one batter. Cody would also like it to be known that he is officially tied for the team lead in wins and also that Tim Hanan is not. Jake Bellington came in for his first action on the mound and threw well, getting six outs to finish out the game. Only one of the runs was earned which keeps the team ERA well below 1.00 on the year. The staff has just been outstanding so far this year. Playing with only ten men, the O's got plenty of at bats and leading the way was Luc de la Soujeole who reached base all four times up. While I'm sure he would have preferred four hits, he was hit twice and walked once but he did have a couple stolen bases and scored twice. Boston Coppedge and Matt Garrabrants both got their first hits of the year. Coppedge hit a sharp ball up the middle which hit the pitcher and with his blazing speed, he was able to beat it out. Garrabrants had the more conventional hit, smoking a ball to left to score Soujeole in the first. While the offense only managed to have six hits on the night, the O's patience at the plate produced another eight walks. The O's broke it open in the fifth with hits from Soujeole and Coppedge and a walk to Garrabrants. McEasy and Cody both reached on errors and the O's took a 5-0 lead to put the game away. The defense was on display as well on Tuesday night with multiple notable contributions. Luc de la Soujeole can do it with the glove as well, making a barehanded grab and throwing out a runner to end the first. In the third inning, Coppedge, playing first base for the first time this season, had a Willie Mays type catch in foul territory. He's pretty sure he hasn't run that far in a long time on defense but Gladney was appreciative. Soujeole also had a running catch in the same inning to keep the game scoreless for the Pirate offense. We had multiple people playing catcher as Bellington, newcomer Kurt Karnowski, and Kevin Simmons all got time behind the dish to give Coppedge a night off. Coppedge's legs did give a sweet sigh of relief. The defense even had a nice play to finish the game, turning a 4-6-3 double play with nice turn from Karnowski to get it started. News and Notes: Boobstick Transfer: There was no transfer last night, meaning that Matt Garrabrants is still in possession of our boobstick. He talked about setting some guidelines for ownership of the boobstick at the team dinner last night but was roundly mocked for thinking that we would even consider such rules. There was a potential for a transfer to longtime boobstick owner, Preston Cole for swinging on 3-0 but he did single so he avoids ownership for now. Fans of the night: On an overcast and windy night, the Orioles had two fans come out and support the squad so we wanted to give props to Katie and Lizzy for coming to the field that no one likes to play at. We suggest more layers next time. Next Game: We will be playing for sole possession of first place as we take on the 4-0 Old Fashioneds. Game time is 4:30 at Jesuit High School. We should be at near full strength as the only man missing should be Carlos "Father of Three Girls" Colon who is on a sweet Disney cruise vacation. He should be back for our game next Tuesday. Looking forward to seeing you all out there! Orioles - 8 Pelicans - 5 WP: Josh "McEasy" McEachin (1-0) SV: Tim "Cannon" Hanan (1) Behind a six run 3rd inning, the Orioles take down the Oak Cliff Pelicans 8-5 in the second game of the season. The pitching has remained stellar early in the season. Starter Alex Faught went four innings, striking out five and only giving up three hits with one earned run. Faught was followed by McEasy and McEasy unfortunately did not received the best of the defensive play behind him. O's defense made three errors behind McEasy, leading to four unearned Pelicans runs. All runs allowed except for one have been unearned which means in two games, the O's pitching staff has kept up a 0.50 ERA. Well done boys! Tim Hanan came in to finish out the game in the 8th and struck out four in his two innings of work, giving up three singles and walking one. It was Hanan's first save of the season. The O's offense was still underwhelming but did come through when it needed to, putting 8 runs on the board. The 3rd inning ended up being all the O's needed as they plated six runs. The first five batters all reached base with four hits and a walk. Cody Gladney started the scoring with a 2 RBI single and later scored in the inning. Gladney led the offense going 3-3 and finishing with 3 RBI and a run scored. The man just couldn't be stopped on Sunday. Other noteworthy performances included Tanner "Bachelor" Stevenson scoring twice and chipping in a stolen base along with Kevin Simmons also scoring twice and reaching base all three times. Even with a bum ankle, Simmons has been getting the job done offensively for the O's The O's were once again active on the basepaths with another four steals to go along with the seven they had in the first game. The aggressive running game has paid off dividends in the first two games of the season, especially with the offense not clicking on all cylinders just yet. News and Notes: O's pitching staff has only allowed 7 hits in 18 innings. Impressive, especially for a men's league. The Orioles offense has scored 14 runs this season. Only two of them have come from hitters in the 1-6 holes. The bottom half of the order has been getting done early in the season. It seems the Orioles stats for the 8th inning never happened as there is nothing listed in the scorebook. This is disappointing only because Matt Garrabrants received his first ever bookstick and there was no actual written record of the event, outside of this game recap. Luckily, we all got to see it live and in person so there is no doubting that existed. The joy was indescribable to all who witnessed it. Boobstick Transfer: Cody Gladney only held the title of Boobstick Owner for one game as Matt Garrabrants earned it with his stolen base in the 8th inning. After stealing second base on a close play, he was declared safe but just assumed he was out because he "believed the umpire would call him out". He started to walk back to the dugout and took a couple steps off the bag. While he did get back, he knew he earned his boobstick calling and graciously accepted the award. We hope you like it, Matt! Next Game: The O's take their 2-0 record into the Tuesday night game against the Pirates. Cody Gladney, fresh off relinquishing the boobstick to Matt Garrabrants, will be starting on the hill and it figures to be a pitching by committee situation all night with innings probably coming from Gladney, Simmons, Preston "Sleuth" Cole, and Jake Bellington. Game is at McInnish Park at 9:00 PM so be ready for a late one everybody. Braves: 0 Orioles: 6 WP: Alex Faught (1-0) 2B: Josh McEachin 3B: Anthony Cass Behind the strong work of Josh "McEasy" McEachin, Alex Faught, Matt Garrabrants, Kevin Simmons, and Tim Hanan, the Orioles displayed the pitching depth so eagerly awaited by combining to throw a two hit shutout of the Braves on Sunday afternoon at Lake Highlands High School. Getting the start was free agent addition Josh McEachin aka McEasy and he certainly made it look easy with three crisp perfect innings of work. No ball left the infield and he finished with six strikeouts against his former club. Alex Faught came in for his own three inning stint and was nearly as dominant. While he did allow a seeing eye single, he immediately picked him off, keeping the Braves to the minimum number of batters. On the offensive side, the O's had a golden opportunity in the first inning by loading the bases with no one out but could not convert the opportunity into runs. Clearly there is still some rust to knock off but the Braves pitching was not exactly the most accurate as they walked eight batters and hit two others in the first three innings. Incredibly, they could not convert any of these into runs. Manager Anthony Cass got the scoring started by having the first Oriole hit of the year with a low line drive that the centerfielder couldn't come up with. With the misjudged dive, Cass was able to take a single and turn it into a triple. Cass did look like he need some oxygen coming around second base as most likely, he has not run that far in a single stretch in multiple years. Jake Bellington followed that up with an infield single to score Cass and get the O's on the board. The game was tight into the 7th when the walks finally caught up with the Braves. Tanner "Bachelor" Stevenson led off the inning with a broken bat single. The next four batters all walked, scoring two runs and giving the cushion the O's needed. A total of six batters walked in the inning and fifteen for the game. The final three frames were thrown by Garrabrants, Simmons, and Hanan with all three looking sharp in their debuts. Garrabrants had an easy 1-2-3 inning, throwing his patented "Woodchipper" two seam fastball for more strikes. Sadly, he did not bean anyone so he is not leading one of his favorite two categories for league supremacy. Simmons also didn't allow a hit in his inning of work, coming in and getting groundballs. Hanan, the staff ace from last year, came on to get a little bit of work in since the game on Tuesday night has been cancelled. He gave up a double to the first batter but came back and got the next three batters in quick order. News and Notes: Boobstick Presentation: Today's Boobstick recipient was none other than Cody Gladney. Gladney had quite the 8th inning as he made multiple errors and then stuck out looking. He did redeem himself by tagging out a runner who tried to advance on his error but to say it wasn't pretty is an understatement. Gladney was holding out for a new contract, skipping all of the off-season workouts held by the team. While he has decided to play out his current deal, today did not help his case to get a raise. Glad to have you back, Cody! Both teams were being no-hit into the 4th inning until Cass had his triple. A Hitter's Union type day it was not. The Orioles staff was so dominant that they only faced one batter over the minimum. Only three Braves got to bat more than twice. Both hits for the Braves came from the last batter in the lineup. The rest of the team was 0 - 27. O's pitching staff: 9 IP, 2H, 0R, 8K, 0BB. Great job guys! Other Results: Pirates 5 - Old Fashioneds 7 Athletics 14 - Oak Cliff Pelicans 10 Indians 2 - Nationals 12 Next Game: Home vs Oak Cliff Pelicans, Sunday, March 10th, 4:00 PM, Lake Highlands High School Fan of the Day: Charlie Gladney came out to support her boobstick father and the rest of his friends today. She was ready to watch some baseball! |
