Braves - 0 WP: Josh "McEasy" McEachin (4-0) 2B: Preston Cole, Kevin Simmons While the rain might have held off for the night at McInnish Park, Josh "McEasy" McEachin did not, striking out 10 in his five innings of work against his former club, pacing the Orioles to an easy win on Tuesday night. For the second time this year, McEasy got the start against his former club and once again, he has made them miss him terribly. McEasy's line for the game: 5 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 10 K, 0 BB. What's even more impressive is the combined lines of the two starts: 8 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 16 K, 0 BB. Seriously. What's even better is they only had one batter reach 2nd base and that was on a well hit double to left center right before he struck out the last guy swinging to end his night. One extra note: no curveballs after the 1st inning. Filthy is the only way to describe it. Cody "QB1" Gladney got an inning of work to finish off the game, putting up a perfect 1-2-3 inning himself. Gladney's ERA is a perfect 0.00 on the year. The bottom of the order did the most damage on this night with 8 of the 12 runs being scored from the 6 hole and below. The O's got five runs in the 2nd inning behind some wild pitching and poor defense from the Braves. McEasy was beaned on the first pitch of his at-bat and moved to 2nd on a wild pitch. After Boston Coppedge struck out, Cody Gladney walked and was followed by Jake "Jameson" Bellington with 6-4 fielder's choice, moving McEasy to 3rd. After another walk to Anthony Cass, McEasy scored on the first of two HBP for Carlos Colon. A painful way to get a RBI but effective nonetheless. A wild pitch brought in Bellington and Kurt "Special K" Karnowski reached on an error, scoring another two runners. Kevin Simmons followed with a double which fell in for a hit to left, scoring Special K and giving 5 runs to the O's on only one hit. The O's continued to pour it on the 3rd starting off with the still hot Tanner "Bachelor" Stevenson, who singled to begin the inning. Matt Garrabrants singled to move Tanner to 2nd. A couple passed balls scored some runs and made it 7-0. McEasy walked and moved onto second. Coppedge hit a ball to the right side which was thrown away by the 2nd baseman for the second time that night. McEasy scored on the play to make it 8-0 and basically the game was over after that. The O's did put together another 4 run inning in the 6th with four straight walks to Gladney, Bellington, Cass, and Colon. Simmons had his 2nd hit of the night to score one and Preston Cole just unleashed on one ball, hitting it to the wall in left center, scoring two more O's. Frenchie hit a fly ball to center field which doubled off Cole who wasn't paying much attention to the number of outs. To be fair to PCB, Simmons would have also been easily doubled off as well. News and Notes: Boobstick Transfer: Coppedge didn't have to own the boobstick for long with Preston's baserunning error making this an easy transfer for the boobstick to be back with his favorite owner. Even with Preston smashing a bases-loaded double not two minutes before and the O's up by 12, mental mistakes take no vacations with this team. The Orioles took back first place with the victory and a rainout for the Nationals. The 2nd game in the series vs the Nationals is also rained out today so we won't see them until June 21st. All the O's reached base except for the leadoff hitter, Frenchie, who had reached base 9 of his last 12 plate appearances. Irony. Stats Note: We will have updated stats for everyone after the game on Sunday. Next Game: Sunday, June 5th, Home vs. Oak Cliff Pelicans, Jesuit HS, 1:00 PM

Athletics - 1 WP: Timmy "The Cannon" Hanan (1-1) 3B: Luc de la Soujeole (1) 2B: Steve Garrabrants (2) The last time the O's and A's faced off, the Orioles made six errors, even more unearned runs, and was just a poor game all around. Sunday was a new day and the O's redeemed themselves on multiple fronts in an 8-1 victory at Jesuit High School on Sunday afternoon. Tim Hanan got the start on the mound a week after he gave up 7 runs in the first inning. The Cannon was significantly better this week, giving up two hits in five innings, striking out three and walking two. Besides a bloop hit to left and a near catch on a slicing ball down the right field line, Hanan mowed through the A's lineup, throwing only 58 pitches in his five innings of work. Not to be outdone, following up Hanan was Preston "PCB" Cole who threw two perfect innings, using his natural sinker to perfection drawing four groundouts and a strikeout of his own to end the game. The defense also made a number of excellent plays and played error free on the day. Steve Garrabrants, making his Orioles season debut, was his normal vacuum like self at shortstop, making five putouts on the day. Cody Gladney had an excellent stop on third base, making a slick diving catch and throw to end the 6th. The defensive play of the day had to be from Jake "Jameson" Bellington who made a sweet play ranging to his right from 2nd, swung around and slung a throw over to first to end the 5th inning. Easily the defensive play of the year for the team and while I can't speak for the rest of the league, I'm willing to make a guess it's in the top 3. The bats got started early again with three runs in the first inning. Tanner Stevenson drew a one-out walk and was followed by a smash double from Steve Garrabrants, moving the runners to 2nd and 3rd. Matt Garrabrants singled home Stevenson and stole second. Josh "McEasy" McEachin kept up his hot hitting with a single of his own to bring home the younger Garrabrants and also stole second. Boston Coppedge followed that up with a sacrifice fly to left field to score the elder Garrabrants and push the score to 3-0. The third inning was more of the same with the top of the lineup scoring another four times. Soujeole lead off with a walk and stole second base. Stevenson followed up with another hit to continue his torrid start at the plate this season. S. Garrabrants drove in his first run with a single to left, moving Stevenson up to 2nd. After a fly-out to center for M. Garrabrants, McEasy singled to load the bases. B. Coppedge drove in his second run of the day on the weakest of groundballs to shortstop, scoring S. Garrabrants. Alex Faught followed up with an RBI single to bring home McEasy and push the score to 7-0, effectively ending the game after the 3rd inning. The O's tacked on a 8th run when Frenchie tripled to lead off the 5th and scored on Bachelor's sac fly. The Orioles are still a half game back of the Nationals for first place. The Orioles took down the Nationals earlier in the year and after this game vs the Braves on Tuesday night, the rematch looms for 1st place once again. News and Notes Boobstick Transfer: While Alex Faught owned the boobstick, he never took possession of it. Sadly for this writer, he didn't have to after B. Coppedge received it for the first time in two years. Popping up to 2nd on a 3-0 count or breaking your bat is bad enough. Doing both at the same time is boobstick worthy. Fan of the Day: Charley Gladney is our first two time winner for Orioles Fan of the Day, also known from now on as the FOTD. It's rare to see such dedication in our line of semi-pro work. We love us some CG. Next Game: 5/24, 9:00 PM, McInnish, Away vs Braves. Probable Starter: J. McEachin Orioles - 8
Indians - 5 WP: Josh "McEasy" McEachin (3-0) 2B: Luc de la Soujeole, Tony Cass, Preston Cole, After suffering their first loss on the year in embarrassing fashion on Sunday, the Orioles came out strong against the Indians, coasting to a 8-5 victory that wasn't as close as the score indicated. Leading the way on the mound was new team ace Josh "McEasy" McEachin. McEasy threw five strong innings, allowing six hits, two runs, and struck out five. Following him was Kurt "Special K" Karnowski who also made his Orioles debut on the mound. After a shaky start, Kurt settled down and got some excellent help from his defense with a Garrabrants - Frenchie - Gladney 7-6-5 connection to get Kurt out of the 6th. Special K's final line: IP, H, ER, K, 2BB. Considering it was his first time in six years to pitch, we'll take that every time. Frenchie and Garrabrants finished out the 7th inning to close down the win for the staff. Offensively, this was the most well rounded game of the year. The O's exploded for 13 hits in the game and were lead by Tanner "Bachelor" Stevenson who went 3-4 at the plate, raising his batting average to .545 on the year. Frenchie was also a force offensively, reaching base on all four trips up to the plate. The scoring got started early for the O's in the first. After a fluke double play which wiped out Luc's walk, M. Garrabrants was beaned and McEasy drew a walk. Boston Coppedge, hitting in the 5 hole for the first time for the O's, singled up the middle and got the scoring started. After a double steal by McEasy and Coppedge, Cody "QB1" Gladney singled home McEasy to move the lead up to 2-0. The second inning held more of the same with Tony Cass leading off with a walk. Preston Cole doubled down the left field line but Cass was thrown out trying to go from 1st to 3rd. Jake Bellington followed with a single to move P. Cole to 3rd. Kevin Simmons grounded out but brought in P. Cole to move the lead to 3 and after another walk to Frenchie, T. Stevenson singled home Bellington, stretching the lead to 4-0. The scoring didn't stop in the 3rd inning with Coppedge drawing a one out walk. He moved to 2nd on Gladney's second hit of the game. After a strike out, Cass smoked a ball to the right center gap, scoring both Coppedge and Gladney and swelling the lead to 6-0. The O's also scored in the 4th with a double from Frenchie and Stevenson singling him home. With the O's offense finally coming to life, it seemed to take the Indians out of the game early. While they did have a couple runners on when the game ended, M. Garrabrants threw his first curveball of the night at the perfect time, getting a swing and miss to end the game. Might be the only time he's had anyone swing and miss on his curveball but hey, it works for us. News and Notes: Coppedge has an official steal! First one since 2012 if records are accurate. (Sadly, they are). While it was the back end of a double steal, this writer will take it! Ten of eleven O's hitters reached base with nine having hits. That's what you called solid from top to bottom! The O's defense played solid all night, throwing out two runners who were trying to stretch for third. Hitting the cut-off man really paid off tonight. McEasy is 2nd in the league in wins, one behind McKinney of the Old Fashioneds who beat the O's last Sunday. McEasy was second in the league in wins last year behind Tim Hanan, although McEasy was awarded first place due to a lack of record keeping from the O's. The O's are hitting .338 in the past two games, over 100 points higher than the first five games. Looks like the O's are starting to wake up the bats and hit their stride. Next Game: Sunday 5/22, 1:00 PM, Home vs Athletics, Jesuit HS. Probable starter: T. Hanan Old Fashioneds - 16
Orioles - 4 LP: Tim Hanan (0-1) 2B: Matt Garrabrants (2), Josh McEachin (1) Ron Washington was famous for his Yogi Berra like saying "That's the way baseball go". That quote came to mind when after the conclusion of the O's-Old Fashioneds game on Sunday. A drubbing the Orioles have not seen in quite some time, there was just no way to describe it besides it being just one of those days. Tim Hanan got the start and it just started off poorly for the O's from the jump. A lead off walk and a single had the first two men aboard. After an error from Luc de la Soujeole, the O's were down 1-0 and there were runners at 2nd and 3rd. After a walk to load the bases, the O's finally got an out with a force at home. Another walk and a hit brought home three more runs for the OF's and a 4-0 lead. After a tough at-bat with Old Fashioned's manager Mark Shonka, Shonka dumped a tailing fly ball into right left for a double and another two runs scored. Another hit followed, scoring Shonka and giving the Old Fashioneds a 7-0 lead after the 1st. Never in Tim's illustrious career with the Orioles has he ever given up 7 runs in an inning, let alone most games. Tim's final line: 2 IP, 7 R, 3 ER, 3 K, 5 BB. Alex Faught, Matt Garrabrants, and Josh McEachin finished out the pitching for the O's. Offensively, the O's could just not get a key hit. The Orioles had a season high 16 runners left on base, which is just absurd considering the most you can leave on base in a 9 inning game is 27. A bright spot for the O's offense was Matt Garrabrants, who seemed to wake up out of his early season slumber with three hard hit balls on the day including two doubles to both gaps. Luc de la Soujeole was also swinging a hot bat, going 3-5 and reaching base four times. He was stranded four times, which just emphasizes the lack of hits with runners on base the O's had this day. Jake Bellington also finished the day 2-4 and continues to swing a hot bat for the O's. Sunday just wasn't the O's day but like the great Rick Carlisle says, "We're going to flush it and move on to the next one". News and Notes: Boobstick Transfer: Alex Faught earned his first ever boobstick by forgetting how many outs there were in the 8th inning, leading to another run. When he asked if he could be exempt from the boobstick considering the score was out of hand by this point, Boston Coppedge gave him a resounding "No" from the dugout. Tanner Stevenson has finally been released from the burden, just in time for his graduation from Seminary. Congrats Tanner! Batting Stats are sorted by alphabetical order. Pitching Stats sorted by innings pitched. Orioles: 6
Nationals: 5 WP: Josh "McEasy" McEachin (2-0) SV: Tim "Cannon" Hanan (2) 2B: Matt Garrabrants, Tim Hanan As has been the case all year, pitching has been leading the way. What hasn't been the case was the solid defense played behind the pitching in the big 6-5 win over the Nationals. The O's got it started early with Luc de la Soujeole singling. Carlos Colon bounced a ball to short with Luc running on the play. Frenchie continued on to 3rd after the throw to 1st. Boston Coppedge followed with a weak grounder to third which was good enough to score Frenchie and get the O's on the board. They weren't done in the 1st inning as Matt Garrabrants walked, stole second, and was driven home by Josh "McEasy" McEachin giving the O's a 2-0 lead after 1. In one boobstick-type moment, McEachin was thrown out by a good twenty feet trying to steal 3rd. Not his finest work. The second inning held more of the same. Cody Gladney led off with a sweet reached on error and was followed by our new sweet swinging lefty Timmy Hanan who singled to put two runners on. After a couple passed balls which scored one, Jake Bellington hit a slow grounder to third which was bobbled, scoring Tim and making the score 4-0. McEasy was on the mound to start and continued his strong start to the season. McEasy threw a season high five innings, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) with three hits, three strikeouts, three walks, and a single plunked batter. The second inning touched him up for the two runs. McEasy struck out ex-Oriole Gary "HotBoyz" Davis to start off the inning but the next three batters reached on a couple singles and a HBP. With an error in center field on an almost guaranteed double play, another run scored to get it 4-2. The O's got back on the board in the 6th with a leadoff walk by Coppedge and followed by a big double from Garrabrants, scoring Colon (running for Coppedge) from 1st. Garrabrants was brought in on a groundout by Gladney, pushing the score to 6-3. The O's needed each and every one as the Nationals came back with a run in the 6th and two runs in the 8th to get it to 6-5 but Timmy Hanan shut the door on them to get the save. The last inning did get a little interesting with a balk and a runner reaching third but Tim found another gear with his off-speed pitch and struck out the final batter to seal the deal. The O's are back at it on Tuesday night against the Oak Cliff Pelicans, 8:45 PM at Reverchon Park. |
